Export of Live Horses for Slaughter from Ireland
The Scandal of Irelands hidden export trade in Meat Horses

The Irish Horse Welfare Trust has uncovered an export trade in live horses for slaughter. It has been operating on an on-going basis between Ireland and the UK for years. The trade operates with no controls and involves the systematic export of live horses from Ireland to Britain in a way that is cruel and ignores EU Legislation.

Despite the fact that Ireland prides itself on its love of horses and it's Sport Horse Industry, the state seems uncaring and unwilling to look after the welfare of these animals even to the extent of what is within the laws for their protection. While officially, according to the Department of Agriculture, "Ireland does not export horses for slaughter and they need Passports or I.D. Marking Sheets to travel to the UK", in reality the only document needed is a Welfare Certificate issued (and retained) at the port of exit, to state that the horses are fit and safe to travel.

In addition to media focus, Dail and European Parlimentary Questions, the IHWT made a submission in April 2003 to the Farm Welfare Advisory Committee.  Furthermore, in June 2003 representatives from IHWT along with representatives from the Racing Club of Ireland, made a presentation at Dail Eireann to the Joint Committee on Agriculture. Urgent action was promised by that Committee but to date nothing has been done. IHWT now plans to launch a Petition Campaign.

Write to your local TDs, MEPs and The Minister for Agriculture asking that our state policy be upheld, that this cruel trade stopped and that legislation to protect animals during transport be enforced. Please support IHWT to have this cruel trade stopped.
