The IHWT is trying to create a Focus on Equine Welfare in Ireland.
Horses and ponies have needs which must always be catered for.
To keep a horse or pony you must be able to provide the following:
Stabling or Field Shelter
Grazing/Turnout - Grazing must be supplemented in winter with
plenty of good quality hay and feedstuffs.
Fencing must be safe and secure.
Clean fresh water should be available at all times.
Horses enjoy company and wherever possible it is best to have
a companion animal.
A regular worming programme must be carried out in conjunction
with good pasture management.
Regular hoof trimming/shoeing must be carried out by a qualified

for well being.
It is the responsibility of every horse/pony owner/carer to ensure
that every effort is made to care for these animals according to their
