Equine Welfare

The IHWT is trying to create a Focus on Equine Welfare in Ireland.  Horses and ponies have needs which must always be catered for.

To keep a horse or pony you must be able to provide the following:

  • Stabling or Field Shelter
  • Grazing/Turnout - Grazing must be supplemented in winter with plenty of good quality hay and feedstuffs.
  • Fencing must be safe and secure.
  • Clean fresh water should be available at all times.
  • Horses enjoy company and wherever possible it is best to have a companion animal.
  • A regular worming programme must be carried out in conjunction with good pasture management.
  • Regular hoof trimming/shoeing must be carried out by a qualified farrier.
  • Veterinary treatment must be sought in any case of illness or injury.
  • Horses and ponies should be checked on at least twice daily for well being.

It is the responsibility of every horse/pony owner/carer to ensure that every effort is made to care for these animals according to their needs. IHWT will be developing this section of the website in the future, providing information on Caring for Horses and Ponies, Pasture Management and Veterinary Tips
