The founder members of IHWT became aware, a number of years ago,
of unlicensed drug trials using horses, where they found horses
in an appalling condition. The lack of controls in Ireland on such
trials was exposed by IHWT.
IHWT successfully took a complaint to the European Commission.
This was subsequently brought before the European Court of Justice.
This case came to a successful outcome. The European Court of Justice
condemned Ireland in the case and was given a final warning in Summer
2002 to implement the European Directive to protect these animals.
IHWT received correspondence in May 2003 from the EC stating that
Ireland has now adopted and implemented new legislation. This is
an excellant result for IHWT.
IHWT will continue to monitor the situation.
